Its kinda has that sound of a new dirrect injection engine, but louder and more pronounced. I would be more worried about it if it hadn't run fine like that for the last 70,000 miles or so.

the mr2 starts and idles between 2-3k. When you put it in gear it drops to under 1k

Oh I know! haha it's crazy. they make some decent engines, but that idle sound. haha I worked with a guy who refused to believe his brand new honda was fine because of it. kept taking it to the dealer for months after he bought it instisting something must be wrong, till they finally offered a buy back to stop having to deal with him. irony, he bought a jetta TDI after that..... *facepalm*
